Why I Became a Boulder Photographer and Why I Love My Job!
I’ve loved photography since I was a little girl.
I got my first “real” camera for Christmas when I was 12 years old, a 35mm Canon Rebel.
I still have that camera. We’ve gone on so many adventures together; trips overseas, roadtrips across the US, countless rolls of film, developed at Wolf Camera or the dark room at my university.
When I was in my teenage years I would go out to state parks and land preservation areas with my grandfather to take photos of the wildlife. We enjoyed the time together, and photographing was an excuse to connect. I have boxes of photos from these adventures, but not enough photos of my grandfather from those times.
After pursuing a degree in music, I realized entering junior year that the pressure and performance were’t for me. I’d taken photography classes since my first semester, and it seemed like a natural choice to switch my degree from music to photography.
I graduated with my BFA in May of 2014, and started my photography business in the Houston area that same year, photographing weddings, kids, and lots of beach sessions.
When I moved to Boulder in 2021 my photography business moved with me, and I have to say that the switch from being a photographer in Galveston, Texas to being a Boulder Photographer was a breath of fresh air. The mountain setting inspires my creativity, and the variety of backdrops leaves me excited for each session. You can travel a few miles from one session location to another, and have completely different photos as a Boulder Photographer, something that doesn’t happen so easily from mile to mile on the beach.
Colorado has so much to offer; the miles of wilderness and open space areas, the blossoms in spring, and aspens in autumn, the mountains and lakes, creeks and valleys. It’s stunning.
And Boulder has some unique, amazing scenery that make finding beautiful locations to take photos easy. Some of my favorite spots as a Boulder Photographer are South Mesa Trailhead, Chautauqua Park, Wonderland Lake, and Boulder Creek; but this list is just the tip of the iceberg. Boulder has so much to offer!
When I look back at the thousands of photos I’ve taken over the years, I realize that the most meaningful photos, the ones I search for as I peruse my files, contain the people I was with in that season. Although I love the scenery and wildlife photos they don’t connect me to the time and place the same way that photos of my favorite humans do.
Capturing sweet memories of your wedding, or moments in your kids childhood are the best part of my job as a Boulder photographer!
My goal with each session; to catch the feeling and season you are in. To observe and document your family, even if life sometimes feels chaotic. To witness your wedding or elopement and take photos that feel authentic and capture the joy of the day.
