A Photographers Guide to Planning a Perfect Chautauqua Park Wedding

Bride in Boulder, Chautauqua Park

Before I moved to Boulder I was mesmerized by the beauty of Chautauqua Park, and the beauty of this unique landscape still captures my attention.  The distinctive shape of the Flatirons provides the perfect backdrop for photos that is uniquely Boulder, whether you’re getting engaged, eloping or planning a Chautauqua Park Wedding.

Imagine exchanging your vows at sunrise, with the Flatirons sweeping dramatically behind you and the sounds of nature all around.  Maybe you’re surrounded by a few of your closest people, or maybe it just the two of you, savoring this moment.

There’s something wonderfully simple and yet profound about using the mountains as your decor, and birdsong as your processional.  Chautauqua Park is a beautiful spot for a meaningful celebration surrounded by Colorado’s natural beauty, the perfect place for your love story to begin its next chapter.

Why Choose Chautauqua Park for Your Wedding?

If you’re looking for a stunning backdrop for your Boulder wedding, consider Chautauqua Park as a stunning option.  With easy access most days of the year, it’s convenient location just south of downtown Boulder, ample parking, and no permit requirement if your wedding is small, planning your wedding at Chautauqua Park makes a lot of decisions for you.  Since chairs and decor are not allowed, you can rely on the beauty of your surroundings as natures decor.

Best Photo Locations at Chautauqua Park

There are two areas that can be used for your Chautauqua Park wedding; weddings with up to 25 guests can take place on the trails (which have the best views) or groups of less than 50 can use the lawn area without a permit (the views here are limited.) If you’re planning a bigger wedding celebration, you can get a permit to use the lawn for just $100 (which is a steal if you look at the cost of a wedding venue.)  If you choose to have an intimate celebration on the trails it is important to note that you must stay on the trails and follow Leave No Trace practices.

What Your Chautauqua Park Wedding Photos Can Look Like

Picture golden light sweeping down the hillside in the evening as you and the love of your life look into each other’s eyes, taking in this moment as the biggest milestone in your life together.  Maybe you walk together through the open fields, dreaming about the future as you enjoy this day (while I take photos in the background). Or maybe you start your wedding day here, exchanging vows as the sun rises, with the first light of morning reflecting off of the flatirons before falling dramatically on you and the one your love.  No matter the time of year, this location provides a stunning backdrop to your wedding day.

Tips for Planning a Chautauqua Park Wedding

Time of Day – As you make your wedding plans, it’s important to consider things like time of day and the season.  For popular locations like Chautauqua Park, I always recommend planning your vow exchange for sunrise, before the area fills up with crowds. This is especially important during the summer months when tourist crowds in Boulder are highest.  If you’re hoping for a relatively intimate ceremony, planning for morning is a must at this location.

If evening is your only option, and you don’t mind having some uninvited guests at your wedding, I recommend exchanging vows 2 hours before sunset.  The sun goes behind the mountains earlier than you’d expect here, and the evening golden hour is gorgeous!  Note that summer afternoon storms are very common here, but they usually roll through quickly.

Timeline – As you plan your timeline, be sure to include ample time for couples photos and any group photos you may want.

Permits – As noted above, you don’t need a permit as long as you have less than 25 people on the trails in attendance (including your vendors) or 50 on the lawn.  If you hire a photographer, they will need a permit for photography (local photographers likely have this already.)  For groups larger than 25, a trail ceremony is not an option, which may motivate you to trim down your guest list!

If you choose to have a larger wedding on the lawn you can apply for a permit here.

Whether you have an officiant or chose to self solemnize, you will need a marriage license, which costs about $35. You can find out more info about getting your marriage license here.
